Stress is a slow killer for men. Aren’t men supposed to suck “it” up, be manly and pretend that they are tough? Men are not supposed to show their emotions, let alone their feelings. What an old belief system! That belief can make you sick and cost you productive time!
Who would know that men would be diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, and unexplainable aches and pains? Wait a minute! This can’t be happening? Aren’t these women’s problems, girly issues? These diagnoses are not for men. The reality is that Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia and unexplainable pain and aches in the body are related to auto-immune issues. When the body is stressed out, gender has nothing to do with it. Stress absolutely affects men at any age or stage of adulthood.
Edward Hallowell, MD founder of the Hallowell Center in Sudbury, Mass., says: “Men notoriously have trouble putting their feelings into words. They bottle things up so they’re more subject to the damages of stress.” No! Men are not supposed to be vulnerable, that is much too feminine. Right? Looking at the issue of vulnerability from a different viewpoint, vulnerability can be the best asset men can have.
Vulnerability is really a strength. Fragility is the emotional and physical weakness and emotional attachments to the old idea of strength and toughness. Fragility is the body becoming weak and exhausted from holding on to stress, which leads to immune issues in the body. When the body is fragile, illness, sickness, and disease happen. The body’s immune system is weakened and you get sick. This is a simple fact.
Seeing vulnerability as a strength, you can begin to address your body’s stress both emotionally and physically. When you allow your Self to be vulnerable, you can get out of the old ideas of manliness and address from a clear standpoint that stress is hurting you and your body. As you allow your Self to be more vulnerable, you are more willing to look at the causes of the stress without denying or suppressing them. When you are more willing to accept that your body is in physical and emotional pain, you can let go of ignoring and resisting what is happening around you. When you are vulnerable, you can allow your Self to “talk” about the stress and the affects of the stress without feeling weak and less manly.
According to Dr. Kenneth Muhich, Founder of Stetson Chiropractic Clinic in Scottsdale, “stress prematurely ages men”. Who wants to get older faster? He also says, ”Stress reduces men’s ability to digest and process food correctly, leading to weight gain and obesity.” Who wants to age quicker and get fat?! Is stress worth it? You have to answer these questions your Self.
Stress does not have to take away your life!
Here are some very practical steps you can do for your Self from Dr. Alvin Swimmer. He calls them stress busters!
1. Close your eyes.
2. Breathe deeply using expanding your entire diaphragm for 5 breathes.
3. STOP thinking about the causes of your stress; get out of your head.
4. Picture a peaceful location for your Self.
5. Relax into your picture…it is your personal picture.
6. Remember…your life is more important than the stress!
7. Consider your position in the Universal scheme of things. From your inside out, you will feel the difference when you let go of stress.
Take charge of your stress. Otherwise, your stress takes control of your life. It is okay to address your stress in clear, practical ways by allowing your Self to acknowledge your emotions and your feelings. It is okay to accept that stress is affecting your health and wellbeing. Stress is not who you are.
