Valentine’s Day, in fact, originated as a liturgical feast to celebrate the decapitation of a third-century Christian martyr, or perhaps two. So, how did we get from beheading to betrothing on Valentine’s Day?
Well, it happened? Is there something to consider here…not as a lesson… (remember the lesson, becomes less on and less on which turns into more on, more on and moron…just saying)…so again to consider that out of something so horrific, a live horror event/movie, something did, in fact, become something near and dear to everyone’s heart!
In this case, one person can make a difference. Here is the one person and the difference he made. The love connection probably appeared more than a thousand years after the martyrs’ death, when Geoffrey Chaucer, author of “The Canterbury Tales” decreed the February feast of St. Valentinus to the mating of birds.
He wrote in his “Parlement of Foules”.
“For this was on seynt Volantynys day. Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.”
Another aspect or example of the shift…
It seems that, in Chaucer’s day, English birds paired off to produce eggs in February. Soon, nature-minded European nobility began sending love notes during the bird-mating season. For example, the French Duke of Orléans, who spent some years as a prisoner in the Tower of London, wrote to his wife in February 1415 that he was “already sick of love” (by which he meant lovesick.) And he called her his “very gentle Valentine.”
English audiences embraced the idea of February mating. Shakespeare’s lovestruck Ophelia spoke of herself as Hamlet’s Valentine. And thus, Valentine’s day shifted from death to life. Life in the spark of love, romance and connection!
The amazing aspect to me about Valentine’s day, being an amateur historian I am always and forever curious how historical and sometimes events based on hysteria, not exactly hysterical or funny, that something good or great can come out of a tyrannical event. My forever question on anything and everything is “Why” are we doing this… and for what reason…reasonable or unreasonable?
In this history of Valentine’s Day, as this example of February 14th of many years, that we can, indeed, turn something around from not so beneficial to something of love, connection, and symbols of love. Be it candy, flowers, cards, songs, or whatever, anything non-productive with l hidden and many times upfront, non-life supporting agendas can be turned around.
My supposition is that individually and together, we can shift, change anything that is not life supporting, heart connecting and life honoring! What a perfect time this Valentine’s Day to reflect, non-emotionally through our hearts what can we do to change these divides among individuals, families, groups trapped in Duality Belief Systems of separation and disconnection. Let’s look deep within our Selves, our roots as humans to honoring humans and all life. This is something to consider!
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY IN THE YEAR 2022
